METSTOR: A GIS to look for potential CO2 storage zones in France

Abstract: International audienceThe METSTOR project offers a methodology to look for potentially interesting CO2 storage areas in France at the initial stage, before the "site selection" step. Our tool, embodied in a Geographic Information System, is based on an interactive map of CO2 storage capacities. Other relevant information layers are included. The geographic layers are complemented with a series of online technical notices. It seems to be the first open online GIS that offers policy makers, businesses and the pu… Show more

“…Overall, France has three sedimentary basins; the Paris Basin is the largest and includes the Dogger and Trias aquifers as candidate CO 2 storage reservoirs. A few studies have sought to estimate the CO 2 storage capacities of these aquifers, one of which estimated that the Dogger could store 13.6 GtCO 2 and that the Trias aquifer could store 15.5 GtCO 2 …”

“…In addition to the hub at Le Havre, CO 2 could be transported onshore to locations atop the Parisian Basin. We use effective storage capacities that are less than 10% of previous estimates: 1.1 GtCO 2 in total over our three Trias injection locations and 900 MtCO 2 in total over our three Dogger injection locations. We used the six potential injection locations, as shown in Table . Offshore .…”

“…This multi-criteria method was applied on the PICORE study area by a GIS tool. The GIS tool was also used in the METSTOR project in France to look for potential CO 2 storage zones based on an interactive map of the CO 2 storage capacities of various sites 61 . Mathias, et al .…”
