A bioassay procedure based on the root and shoot growth of cucumber and sorghum were used to study the phytotoxicity, as affected by varying the concentration of metribuzin, and persistence of metribuzin residues in soil. Sorghum and cucumber were found to be very susceptible test plant species to metribuzin. It was found that the persistence and phytotoxicity increased with increasing rate of application of metribuzin, and the relationship between herbicide concentration and phytotoxicity was best described by a quadratic equation. Sorghum and cucumber plants emerged as very sensitive new bioassay plants for metribuzin and could detect residues even at 0.010 and 0.046 ppm in the post harvest soil of potato crop.

SummaryThe aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) sample preparation technique coupled with gas chromatography with electron capture and nitrogen phosphorus detection (GC-ECD/NPDgas chromatography with electron capture and nitrogen phosphorus detection) for the analysis of pesticide residues in peppermint. Validation experiments were carried out for 10 compounds belonging to the group of herbicides at two spiking levels from 0.01 to 0.524 mg/kg. The obtained results were highly satisfactory and met the criteria recommended by the European Union document SANCO/12495/2011. The compounds showed recoveries in the range of 70-120% and repeatability (relative standard deviation) equal to or less then 20%, with the except for chloridazon and S-metolachlor. The method used, which was based on the QuEChERS allowed to obtain high quality pesticide residue results with a reduced number of analytical steps and a lower glassware and solvent consumption.Key words: peppermint, gas chromatography, pesticide residues, QuEChERS StreszczenieCelem badań było sprawdzenie przydatności techniki ekstrakcji/oczyszczania zwanej QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) w połączeniu z chromatografią gazową z detekcją wychwytu elektronów i azotowo-fosforową (GC-ECD/NPD -gas chromatography with electron capture and nitrogen phosphorus detection) w badaniach pozostałości środków ochrony roślin w mięcie. Walidację przeprowadzono dla 10 związków należących do grupy herbicydów na 2 poziomach wzbogacenia od 0,01 do 0,524 mg/kg. Uzyskane wyniki były zadowalające i spełniały wymagania zaleceń europejskich SANCO/12495/2011. Odzysk dla badanych związków mieścił się w przedziale 70-120%, a powtarzalność wyrażona względnym odchyleniem standardowym była mniejsza lub równa 20%, wyjątek stanowiły chloridazon i S-metolachlor. Zastosowana technika, oparta na QuEChERS pozwoliła uzyskać prawidłowe wyniki przy minimalnej liczbie etapów procesu analitycznego oraz niewielkim zużyciu odczynników i szkła laboratoryjnego.Słowa kluczowe: mięta pieprzowa, chromatografia gazowa, pozostałości środków ochrony roślin, QuEChERS

Weed control in lentil is difficult because lentil is a poor competitor with weeds and few POST broadleaf herbicides are available. Imadazolinone-tolerant lentils have more herbicide options, but the optimum timing for herbicide application is not known. The critical period of weed control (CPWC) is the period in a crop's life cycle when weeds must be controlled in order to prevent yield loss. The objective of this research was to determine the CPWC for lentil. We made lentil remain weedy or weed-free from 0 to 11 aboveground nodes to investigate the durations of weed interference and weed-free period, respectively. It was found that lentil has a CPWC beginning at the five-node stage and continuing to the 10-node stage. There was an inverse relationship between weed biomass and lentil yield; that is, lentil yield was highest when weed biomass is minimal. We propose that the CPWC begins when weeds start to accumulate significant biomass and ends with crop canopy closure. Therefore, to maximize lentil yields, growers should consider using a POST residual herbicide that can control weeds during the CPWC.
