Resumen: El presente trabajo incluye tres miradas a la musicología sobre la América hispana colonial. La primera es un enfoque estadístico, basado en una amplia recolección de la creciente bibliografía sobre el tema. Presenta tablas (con sus discusiones) sobre frecuencia de temáticas, distribución geográfica, cronológica y lingüística, objetos, metodologías y marcos disciplinares; los resultados difieren en algunos casos de la percepción común del campo (manifestada en quejas y desiderata). A continuación, encaro el tema del positivismo como rótulo negativo aplicado a los iniciadores de estos estudios, discuto los límites de aplicabilidad de esa etiqueta y resalto que la recopilación de datos en la que se basa el credo es condición necesaria, pero no suficiente. Por último, analizo una consecuencia de la entrada de este repertorio en el circuito de difusión de la música de concierto: la proliferación de propuestas, no asentadas en el rigor disciplinario, que suponen sin más la continuidad entre las músicas coloniales y las popular-tradicionales. Aunque algunas de ellas son inspiradoras, es necesario contrastarlas con la evidencia disponible.
