(Methylthio)methyl and (N,N-Dimethylcarbamoyl)methyl Upper-Rim-Substituted Calix[4]arenes as Potential Extractants for Ag(I), Hg(II), Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II), and Au(III)

Abstract: The (methylthio)methyl and (N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl)methylcalix[4]arenes act as extracts for the transfer of Pd(II) and Au(III) from an aqueous to a chloroform layer.

“…Thiocarbamoyl groups [159,160] or dithiocarbamoyl groups when attached to the calixarene skeleton such as in ligand 30 [161,162] provide selectivity for Ag + , Pd 2+ , Hg 2+ and other 'soft' metal ions over 'hard' ones.…”

“…In order to circumvent the use of such chemicals liquid-liquid extraction, as well as solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques applying numerous sorbents, have already been developed. Polymer-supported extractants, usually based on PS-DVB or some methacrylates suffer from insufficient selectivity and reduced chemical stability in the extraction media [6,7].…”
