Methylmercury Induced Neurotoxicity and the Influence of Selenium in the Brains of Adult Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Abstract: The neurotoxicity of methylmercury (MeHg) is well characterised, and the ameliorating effects of selenium have been described. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms behind this contaminant-nutrient interaction. We investigated the influence of selenium (as selenomethionine, SeMet) and MeHg on mercury accumulation and protein expression in the brain of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). Fish were fed diets containing elevated levels of MeHg and/or SeMet in a 2 × 2 full factorial design for eight w… Show more

“…Omics analyses allow for experiments which can implicate molecular networks affected by chemicals and help elucidating molecular initiating and key events in adverse outcome pathways [56]. Omics profiling is performed without prior hypothesis and is often considered as unbiased and discovery driven [3,57]. DIGE based proteomics analysis after exposure to HBCD, CB-153 and TCDD at the LD level (present study) induced dysregulation of three (HSPA8, G6PD and SIRT2), one (G6PD) and four (G6PD, TUB2A, ACTB and RALA) proteins, respectively.…”

“…There is also conflicting and inconsistent evidence on the protective role of micronutrients, such as Se in organic compounds (mostly selenomethionine and selenocysteine) in fish eaters regarding the Hg exposure-related neurotoxic effects in humans. Mechanisms for the interaction of Hg and Se were proposed [ 126 , 127 , 128 ] but are generally not yet fully understood; hence further studies are required [ 22 , 58 , 129 , 130 , 131 , 132 ].…”

“…Duration of wing flapping of male flies decreased in a MeHg concentration-dependent manner, suggesting that desire for copulation in male and female flies decreases as the concentration of MeHg increases. Since neurons and neuronal circuitry play important roles in the sexual functions [ 36 , 37 ], and MeHg induces neurotoxicity [ 38 ], it is possible that MeHg-induced sexual dysfunction is because of its neurotoxic effect.…”
