Methyl t-butyl ether-degrading bacteria for bioremediation and biocontrol purposes

Abstract: A total of fifteen potential methyl t-butyl ether (MtBE)-degrading bacterial strains were isolated from contaminated soil. They have been identified as belonging to the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Kocuria, Janibacter, Starkeya, Bosea, Mycolicibacterium, and Rhodovarius. Bacillus aryabhattai R1B, S. novella R8b, and M. mucogenicum R8i were able to grow using MtBE as carbon source, exhibiting different growth behavior and contaminant degradation ability. Their biocontrol ability was tested against various fung… Show more

“…Starkeya novella is known for its extensive metabolic flexibility, since it is a mesophilic organism able to grow not only on single carbon compounds (such as methanol and formate) and sulfur derivatives (e.g. thiosulfate) [49], but also in soils contaminated with toxic organophosphate insecticides [50] and organic fuel additives [51]. Bacteria that survive a variety of environmental stresses from extreme natural conditions to artificial pollutants, could harbour valuable biocatalysts for the manufacture of platform chemicals [52,53].…”

“…Similar strains of A. denitrificans, such as A. denitrificans strain SP1, A. denitrificans ASU-035, A. xylosoxidans subspecies denitrificans strain EST4002 and A. denitrificans strain TB, have recently been identified to be able to degrade di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, pyrene, 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and reduce nitric oxide, respectively [29][30][31][32]. Although the genera Mycolicibacterium, such as M. mucogenicum, M. frederiksbergense IN53, M. vanbaalenii, have been reported to be able to degrade methy t-butyl ether, polychlorinated biphenyls and petroleum hydrocarbons [33][34][35], the strain M. phocaicum N4, which shows 99.71% sequence homology to the isolated B-10 strain in this study via 16S rRNA sequencing technique, has recently been isolated from human bronchial aspirate from patients showing tuberculosis symptoms [36].…”
