Methyl Sulfone Manifests Anticancer Activity in a Metastatic Murine Breast Cancer Cell Line and in Human Breast Cancer Tissue - Part 2: Human Breast Cancer Tissue

Abstract: Background: Methyl sulfone is a small molecule that reverses cancerous phenotypes of a melanoma cell line. Here, we sought to determine whether methyl sulfone was effective against human breast cancer tissue. Methods: We studied normal and cancerous breast tissue obtained from 17 patients. Results: Methyl sulfone introduced structural order, with cancer tissue taking on the morphology of normal in vivo breast tissue; this structural order was sustainable over long-term culture. Methyl sulfone promoted proper w… Show more

“…Tam used in combination therapy with many other constituents for the treatment of breast cancer [4143]. It also synergize other drugs in the combination therapy [44, 45] MSM is a natural sulfur containing compound which acts against various breast cancers [10, 27, 28] and is already found as an efficient drug in combination therapy against cancer cells [46]. Combination therapy is one of the methods we can employ to reduce the adverse effects of the drug, either by reducing the concentration of the individual drug, or by synergising the mechanism of the drug.…”

“…Recently, we suggested that MSM could substantially decrease the viability of human BCa cells due to its anticancer activities, such as contact inhibition, wound healing, and blockage of cell migration [10, 26]. Additionally, Caron et al reported that MSM manifests anti-cancer activity in metastatic BCa cells [27, 28]. …”

“…Though few studies have examined the effectiveness of MSM on wound healing, the innate immune system may also benefit from enhanced wound closure, as assessed by the scratch test in vitro [124,125,126]. Future studies would be needed to confirm these results in vivo.…”

“…In vitro studies using MSM alone or in combination have evaluated the metabolic and phenotypic effects of a number of cancer cell lines including breast [100,101,122,123,126,181], esophagus [119], stomach [119], liver [119,120], colon [121], bladder [99], and skin cancers [123,125] with promising results. MSM independently has been shown to be cytotoxic to cancer cells by inhibiting cell viability through the induction of cell cycle arrest [119,122,123], necrosis [119], or apoptosis [100,101,119,120,121].…”

“…The consumption of MSM can be possible through feed (Morton & Siegel 1986;Horvath et al 2002;Caron et al 2010). This MSM has different abilities such as anticancer activity against various type of cancers (Ebisuzaki 2003;Lim et al 2012;Caron et al 2013aCaron et al , 2013bJoung et al 2014), antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms (Beilke et al 1987;DiSilvestro et al 2008). Our recent studies proved that MSM has the ability to upregulate the expression levels of GHR and STAT5b in osteoblast-like cells .…”
