Methyl jasmonate inhibition of root growth and induction of a leaf protein are decreased in an Arabidopsis thaliana mutant.

Abstract: Jasmonic acid and its methyl ester, methyl jasmonate (MeJA), are plant signaling molecules that affect plant growth and gene expression. Primary root growth of wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings was inhibited 50% when seedlings were grown on agar medium containing 0.1 IAMMeJA. An ethyl methanesulfonate mutant (jarn) with decreased sensitivity to MeJA inhibition of root elongation was isolated and characterized. Genetic data indicated the trait was recessive and controlled by a single Mendelian factor. Me… Show more

“…More than a decade ago, additional components downstream of signaling molecules SA, JA and ethylene were characterized in several mutant plants, such as the jasmonate response mutant jar [26], the ethylene response mutant etr [27] and the SAR regulatory mutant npr1 [28]. In a genetic screening for plants failed to express PR genes after SAR induction, npr1 mutant was isolated in Arabidopsis [28] and NPR1 gene was cloned [29].…”

“…In addition to the SAR mutants, mutants defective in their response to ethylene (etrl, ein2) (Bleecker et al, 1988;Guzman and Ecker, 1990) or jasmonic acid (jar1) (Staswick et al, 1992) have been characterized. The ethylene-insensitive mutants have been used to show that SAR signal transduction is ethylene independent (Lawton et al, 1994.…”

“…The mutant alleles used for the construction of double mutants with pen3-1 were coi1-1 (Col-6 background [Feys et al, 1994]), npr1-1 (Cao et al, 1994), sid2-1 (Nawrath and Mé traux, 1999), pad4-1 (Glazebrook and Ausubel, 1994), eds1-1 (Ws-0 background [Parker et al, 1996]), Etr1-1 (Bleecker et al, 1988), jar1-1 (Staswick et al, 1992), edr1 (Frye and Innes, 1998), sgt1b-1 (Ler background [Peart et al, 2002]), rar1-10 (Ler background ), NahG (Lawton et al, 1995), pen1-1 (Collins et al, 2003), and pen2-3 (Lipka et al, 2005). All of the mutant lines, unless noted otherwise, were in the Col-0 background.…”
