Methyl Jasmonate Induced Oxidative Stress and Accumulation of Secondary Metabolites in Plant Cell and Organ Cultures

Abstract: Recently, plant secondary metabolites are considered as important sources of pharmaceuticals, food additives, flavours, cosmetics, and other industrial products. The accumulation of secondary metabolites in plant cell and organ cultures often occurs when cultures are subjected to varied kinds of stresses including elicitors or signal molecules. Application of exogenous jasmonic acid (JA) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) is responsible for the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent defence mechanism… Show more

“…Furthermore, in nature it was observed that plants synthesize alkaloids in response to different biotic and abiotic factors [124]. Therefore, these factors, or the associated signaling compounds produced in response to these factors, can be used as elicitors to enhance the biosynthesis of specialized metabolites in in vitro techniques [125,126]. For example, using methyl jasmonate as an elicitor in Leucojum shoot culture can enhance production of galantamine by two-fold [127].…”

“…As they are toxic to pathogens, their accumulation at the infection site can restrict pathogen development and the successive plant colonization or contrast infections by increasing the mechanical strength of the host cell wall [ 83 ]. Jasmonates (JAs), or their derivates, enhance the accumulation of phenolic compounds in different plant species contributing to the resistance against B. cinerea [ 84 , 85 ] and have a pivotal role in the reduction of H 2 O 2 level by the enhancement of antioxidant enzymes activity in plant cells [ 86 , 87 ]. Sys-treated plants likely increase the JAs production that may modulate the activity of CAT and APX antioxidant enzymes in both plant species.…”

“…Sys-treated plants likely increase the JAs production that may modulate the activity of CAT and APX antioxidant enzymes in both plant species. Previous studies showed that the application of MeJA to in vitro cultures induced not only the expression of defense-related genes but also the antioxidant enzyme activity and the over-production of secondary metabolites [ 86 ]. Our results demonstrate the increase of both phenolic content and the antioxidative activity of CAT and APX enzymes likely determined by the activation of the JA pathways triggered by Sys treatment.…”

“…It is potentially harmful at high concentrations because of its high reactivity. It is known that MeJA treatment and drought lead to the generation of ROS [ 117 , 118 , 119 , 120 ]. Each subcellular compartment in plants including vacuole contains its own set of ROS-producing and ROS-scavenging proteins and TIP could be a part of this mechanism [ 119 ].…”
