Present study aims to investigate the influences of lateral bed slope and turbulent diffusion on the erosion and deposition processes in suspended sediment dominated rivers. An expression of erosion term in bank region, which is composed of mass conservation equations for sediment in fluid body and bed layer, is derived based on the mechanism of sediment transportation by turbulent diffusion. Lateral profile for the sediment concentration which yields two peaks is derived theoretically from a depth-integrated convection equation in an idealized flow field. Results of numerical computation on bed evolution suggest that the ridge due to sediment deposition is formed in bank region, erosion area is produced at the inside of the ridge corresponding to the peak sediment concentration, and a flat sediment deposition area takes place due to sediment transpot by turbulent diffusion in the channel center as well. The proposed modified erosion term amplifies such lateral bed morphology.

A method is proposed to predict bank erosion and sand bar migration in river reaches where suspended sediment transport is dominant. The method focuses on the influence of the lateral bed slope on the erosion and deposition rate of suspended sediment, as well as on the profile of lateral bedload transport, assuming that geometric similarity holds in the bank region. In the proposed model, the erosion and deposition rate can be evaluated using either the bed shear stress at a reference location or the average bed shear stress in the bank region. In order to simulate bank erosion and associated bank shifting with a depth-integrated-base treatment, stretchable grids were added to the conventional coarse grid system near the bank. The proposed method, including the bank erosion model, is applied to the lower reach of the Brahmaputra River, which is ∼90 km long and ∼12.50 km wide. The computed results on bank shifting, sand bar migration, and sediment transport rates are compared with data obtained from field investigations and remote sensing. These results suggest that the proposed method is applicable for predicting sediment issues in river reaches dominated by suspended sediment.

A flow pattern with varying aspect ratio (breadth/depth) and boundary roughness ratio (bed roughness/ side wall roughness) in open channel is proposed in this paper. The distribution of boundary shear and the mean boundary shear are studied. On the basis of this, velocity distribution and flow resistance are further discussed. The evaluation formulae of boundary shear, velocity distribution and flow resistance are derived systematically. The results are suitable for all aspect ratio and roughness ratio, and are better in agreement with a wide range of experimental data. These are much helpful to the study of sediment transport, flow diffusion, river engineering, etc.
