“…No significant difference was found between the three haemostasis groups in terms of primary and secondary haemorrhage rates. This finding is in agreement with an earlier study by Rungby et al 3 The post-operative occurrence of episodes of blood-stained saliva was introduced as a new parameter in order to compare haemostasis techniques. Measurement of this parameter showed that the diathermy group experienced less bleeding in the first two days after surgery, followed by more bleeding over subsequent days, compared with the other two haemostasis methods.…”

“…To our knowledge, tonsillectomy haemostasis via compression packs alone has not previously been investigated in a randomised trial. A previously published prospective, non-randomised study of method of haemostasis in cold steel tonsillectomy showed that the use of compression alone resulted in significantly lower post-discharge pain scores and fewer doctor consultations, compared with bipolar diathermy and ligation 3 . Our study found no difference between these groups in terms of post-operative pain and morbidity.…”

“…19 Our finding of a plateau in the pain relief curve over postoperative days 4 through 6 was similar to that seen in other clinical trials, regardless of the techniques and tools used. 19,20 In this study, there was a trend for mean postoperative pain scores to be lower for HS subjects than for EC subjects. Although pain scores were not statistically significant, the ability to sleep was statistically significant.…”

“…However, cold tonsillectomy is associated with less postoperative pain. 3,4 Electrocautery Monopolar cautery has become the most common technique for the performance of tonsillectomy. Using electrical current which creates temperatures from 400 to 600°C, dissection is performed with minimal intraoperative bleeding.…”
