Methods for the Quantification of Salivary Cortisol and of a-amylase in Biosensors and Portable Devices

Abstract: There is an increasing interest in the analysis of salivary biomarkers for medical practice. The objective of this article was to identify the specificity and sensitivity of quantification methods used in biosensors or portable devices for the determination of salivary cortisol and salivary a-amylase. There are no biosensors and portable devices for salivary amylase and cortisol that are used on a large scale in clinical studies. These devices would be useful in assessing more real-time psychological research… Show more

“…In this way, the enzyme could play an important role in enamel demineralization, due to production of acids in the vicinity of tooth structures through the reactions of bacterial metabolism [4,5]. As the physiological functions of alphaamylase have not been completely explored, there is a growing interest in the use of saliva as an indicator in the prediction, diagnosis and progression of different local and systemic disease, including dental caries [6].The purpose of our study is to evaluate the correlation between the salivary level of alpha-amylase and the incidence of dental caries in young permanent teeth.…”

“…The biomarker is available in blood, but also in 24-hours urine (urinary free cortisol) and saliva [3][4][5]. Hair cortisol have a potential role but its use in common practice is still limited [6,7]. As hormone, C 21 H 30 O 5 is included in steroid class of hormones of glucocorticoid subtype [1][2][3].…”
