Methods for Sample Collection, Storage, and Analysis of Freshwater Phosphorus

Abstract: Although phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for biological productivity, it can cause freshwater degradation when present at fairly low concentrations. Monitoring studies using continuous sampling is crucial for documenting P dynamics in freshwater ecosystems and to reduce the risk of eutrophication. Despite literature updates of developments of the analytical methods for measurement of P species in natural waters, there has been no comprehensive review addressing freshwater sample collection, sample prep… Show more

“…Traditional instrumentation for the analysis of nutrients like NO 2 − , NO 3 − and PO 4 − are expensive to purchase and transport to remote locations. The ability to analysis the samples onsite removes the need to treat and store the samples for subsequent analysis which can impact the sample integrity (Kalkhajeh et al, 2019;Bowden and Diamond 2003;García-Robledo, 2014;Gordon et al, 1993). The low-cost sensing platform presented in this study enables highly accurate and sensitive analytical measurements for nutrients to be made simply and rapidly.…”

“…Results (figure 11) showed the concentration of phosphate was above Iraqi standard limiting of drinking water that allowed for phosphorus in freshwater [22; 23], and there was a significant differentiation among seasons with positive correlation coefficient with temperature, TDS and nitrate (r= 0.95; 0.49; 0.94) respectively which can be pointed to the possibility to find chemicals fertilizers in water. The higher concentrations of phosphate in stream water could be returned to discharge of sewage wastewater that rich in detergents [51], and could be pointed to reach agriculture land wastes that treated with phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers to the stream water [52].…”
