Methodology for the Semi-quantitative Evaluation of Geoheritage Applied to Coastal Geotourism in João Pessoa (Paraíba, Northest Brazil)

Abstract: In this work, a new methodology is presented for the semi-quantitative evaluation of the coastal geotouristic potential and protection requirements of ten sites chosen in the coastline of the State of Paraíba, about 54 km from the state capital. The geotouristic potential was determined based on two indicators, whose value was estimated: the Touristic Use Potential, with ten variables, with different levels of importance, and the Additional Value, with six variables, also with different levels of importance. T… Show more

“…Quantitative approaches have also been developed to provide numerical models for the geosite assessment (Fassoulas et al, 2012;Štrba et al, 2015;Brilha, 2016;Kubalíková, 2019;Mucivuna et al, 2019;Pereira et al, 2019;Ruban et al, 2021). Some of the methods are intended to be "omni-comprehensive" by considering and parameterizing every side of the geoheritage topic, from the geological values (uniqueness, geodiversity, significance, etc.)…”

“…The population of João Pessoa has more than doubled within the last 30 years (1988−2018) according to IBGE (2020). Urban areas experienced similar increases during the same period, i.e., a rapid increase in population, and urban growth has increased the pressure on the natural environment (Pereira et al, 2019). These results have a direct correlation with the decrease in forest loss in João Pessoa.…”

“…There are various approaches of geoheritage interpretation of unique geological objects (Brilha, 2016; Carrión‐Mero et al, 2020; Pereira, de Carvalho, & da Cunha, 2019; Pereira & Pereira, 2010; Prosser, Murphy, & Larwood, 2006; Reynard & Brilha, 2018; Ruban, 2010; Štrba et al, 2015; Štrba, Kršák, & Sidor, 2018; Tomic & Božic, 2014; Wimbledon et al, 1995; Wolniewicz, 2021). The geoheritage analysis given in the present study is qualitative, because only one potentially unique feature is considered.…”
