Methodology for the assessment of measuring uncertainties of articulated arm coordinate measuring machines

Abstract: Articulated Arm Coordinate Measuring Machines (AACMMs) have gradually evolved and are increasingly used in mechanical industry. At present, measurement uncertainties relating to the use of these devices are not yet well quantified. The work carried out consists of determining the measurement uncertainties of a mechanical part by an AACMM. The studies aiming to develop a model of measurement uncertainty are based on the Monte Carlo method developed in Supplement 1 of the Guide to Expression of Uncertainty in Me… Show more

“…Monte Carlo (MC) method is widely used in measurement uncertainty estimation procedures [12,13], for example applied to coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) uncertainty analysis [14], [15,16,17]. In this work, we used the MC simulation to estimate the uncertainty of the reference artefact in the calibration of length measurement systems.…”

“…Similar approaches developing an AACMM uncertainty model using a multi-level Monte Carlo method can be found in [28,29]. In our work, the input variables of the model were first identified, and the n -homogeneous transformation matrices (XYZABC) were considered the output variables of the IMP’s mathematical model.…”

“…However, the measuring accuracy of the AACMM is much lower than that of the orthogonal CMM [5,6], which may greatly limit its applications. A potential strategy to improve the measuring accuracy of the AACMM is to choose high precision hardware components and to apply high requirements for manufacturing and assembly [3,7].…”
