Methodological Variations in Guided Imagery Interventions Using Movement Imagery Scripts in Sport: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Imagery studies have varied widely in the methods used to deliver guided imagery interventions. This variation has led to difficulties comparing studies and uncertainty as to what methods should be followed. A review is needed to evaluate the interventions to date to inform applied recommendations. The aim of this systematic review was to (1) assess the quality of intervention design, (2) investigate the extent to which interventions vary, (3) highlight the different methods that should be considered in the de… Show more

“…Imagery is a cognitive process in which individuals recall and create sensory experiences in the absence of external stimuli [ 9 ] and is among the most popular forms of mental training techniques used in psychological skills programs for athletes [ 10 , 11 ]. Athletes often use imagery to prepare themselves for performance, mentally rehearsing routines related to their respective sports before a competition [ 12 ].…”

“…Finally, the high compliance rates may be a result of the content offered in both the imagery scripts and the short stories. The reliance on scripts has proven to be an effective method used to deliver guided imagery interventions [32].…”

“…A systematic review of guided imagery interventions indicate scripts remain the most common method of delivery [32]. In addition to the content of the imagery script being appropriate to the situation (i.e., active play), the imagery script also followed key elements from Lang"s bioinformational theory [37] including stimulus propositions (e.g., kicking or throwing a ball or imaging playing with friends), and stimulus response (e.g., feeling the ball hit your foot as you receive a pass or feeling your heart rate increase as you run around the park) in order to generate a vivid and effective image.…”

“…Given growing interest in imagery as a complementary practice that integrates well with dance training (Adams et al, 2012; Batson and Wilson, 2014) and the promising evidence on this topic, there is a need to study the implementation and effects of specific, designated imagery training on dance performance, with the goal of facilitating structured imagery training in dance (Nordin and Cumming, 2006b), with detailed, well-established protocols (Overby and Dunn, 2011; Cooley et al, 2013; Pavlik and Nordin-Bates, 2016).…”
