Methodological Quality and Risk of Bias Assessment of Cardiovascular Disease Research: Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials Published in 2017

Abstract: BackgroundAll randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) are required to follow high methodological standards. In this study, we aimed to assess the methodological quality of published cardiovascular clinical research trials in a representative sample of RCTs published in 2017.MethodsCochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was used to identify cardiovascular clinical research trials with adult participants published in 2017. Overall, 250 (10%) RCTs were randomly selected from a total of 2,419 studies. Data on … Show more

“…Statistical analyses were conducted by the statistical software R version 4.1.2 (R Development Core Team 2021) [17]. To analyze for 5-year changes in main study characteristics, we compared the 2017 sample with 250 RCTs published in 2012 [15]. All collected binomial variables were analyzed using logistic regression analyses with generalized linear models.…”

“…The main characteristics of included cardiovascular RCTs are shown in Table I. Data from 2017 have been previously partly reported (14). Values from 2012, some data on additional measures of methodological quality and reporting for both years and statistical comparisons are novel.…”
