Methodological Progress for Computer Simulation of Solidification and Casting

Abstract: The dramatic progress made over the last 10 to 15 years in the field of "computer simulation of solidification and casting" is greatly due to the supports by academic as well as industrial research. The driving force behind this undertaking was the promise of predictive capabilities that will allow process and material developments. Here, the recent works on modeling were summarized, for the macrosegregation in the macroscale simulation, and the Cellular Automaton, the solidification path combined with the mic… Show more

“…As the microsegregation is at the origin of the macrosegregation, several works have been dedicated to microsegregation models applicable for macrosegregation predictions [6][7][8][9][10][11]. Notably, macrosegregation has already been predicted with microsegregation models that were coupled with thermodynamic databases [10,11,13,17]. The improvement of the description of the microstructure was also an important center of interest.…”

“…The prediction of channel segregates was also the topic of many studies. Most of them were concerned with freckles, corresponding to a situation where the thermal gradient is oriented in the same direction as the gravity [1,17]. Only few of them were related to other situations of solidification.…”

“…and 100Cr6 Alloys With Kobayashi approximation, the solidification path of one solid precipitating from the liquid or the peritectic transformation can be predicted, 23) but the precipitation of other phases like the MnS and Fe 3 P etc. can not be evaluated directly without the help of the additional precipitation models.…”

“…At present, it is necessary to reveal the quantitative relationship between the process variables and the solidification microstructure, but it is difficult to visually observe the dendrite growth process in the molten metal by conventional experiment. Numerical simulations were developed to understand the dendritic growth and microstructure formation in solidification in the last twenty years [6][7][8][9]. The cellular automaton (CA) method has been rapidly developed as an attractive and efficient technique to predict the evolution of solidification structures [10][11][12] and study the mechanical properties of composite in the field of materials science [13,14].…”
