Methodological Issues in Psychopathology Research

Abstract: We present an overview of methodological issues involved in conducting psychopathology research, including conceptual, analytic, and interpretive considerations. Research issues germane to structured diagnostic interviewed, comorbidity of mental disorders, and ascertainment and sampling are reviewed. Further, the problem of specificity (with respect to disorder, to differential deficit, and to time) is discussed. Specific issues concerning risk vs protective factors, conducting research with special population… Show more

“…As stated by Sher and Trull (1996), experimental manipulations are valuable primarily in regard to the internal validity concerning etiological processes that are related to the dependent variables. Unlike past research, which was correlational in nature, the present study demonstrates that EA can play a causal role in the development of suspicious beliefs.…”

“…One of the values of true experiments in analogue populations is the relative strength of the inferences that can be made in regard to the cause of the experimental results, which are typically thought to model psychopathological processes (e.g., Barch & Berenbaum, 1994;Sher & Trull, 1996). We hypothesised that a manipulation of EA would lead to variations in levels of suspiciousness among college students, and that this effect would be moderated by gender.…”

“…Approximately half of all individuals with a DSM disorder meet criteria for at least one additional comorbid disorder (Kessler et al 1994;Robins and Regier 1991;Newman et al 1996), an issue that has implications for clinical practice and research design (Clark, Watson, and Reynolds 1995). If comorbid cases are present in a research sample (as they will be in unselected samples such as the one studied here), it is important to control for the potentially confounding effects of multiple disorders before interpreting the unique influence of a particular target disorder on later outcomes (Sher and Trull 1996). In our multivariate analyses we include statistical controls for the spectrum of symptoms (and diagnoses) before evaluating findings about associations between a…”

“…The inclusion of indicators of these other psychopathology spectrums, along with the indicators of the externalizing spectrum developed here, will be very helpful in working toward a comprehensive, empirically based model of psychopathology. For example, the inclusion of indicators from other spectrums could enhance our understanding of the "specificity" (Sher & Trull, 1996) of various externalizing constructs, potentially revealing how these constructs also delineate spectrums beyond externalizing (e.g., how specific alcohol-related phenomena might be not only elements in the externalizing spectrum but also meaningfully related to the internalizing and psychotic spectrums). Finally, our model development endeavor was limited to cross-sectional data covering a wide adult age range. As such, we do not have the longitudinal data needed to characterize developmental patterns within the externalizing spectrum.…”
