Methodological Foundations of User Involvement Research: A Contribution to User-Centred Design Theory

Abstract: The concept of involving user perspectives into product development processes has its roots in the early 1960s. Although this seems to be following a quite long tradition, as a design research field, it did not improve substantially and, so far, no consistent perception or even definition of the concept can be found. The paper points out where design research on user involvement still lacks methodological and theoretical foundation and makes the attempt of providing impulses for systemizing the existing body o… Show more

“…While the project began as a designer/user methodology, it became apparent that in order to produce the most effective design and to incorporate the experience and knowledge of the community partners, a co-design process was required, thus transforming end-users into co-creators. The increased time commitment confirms one of the barriers related to engaging community partners in the design process [8,9], but because all co-creators were willing to spend the time, the result was a successful design [20].…”

“…A review of case studies conclude that co-design projects have improved project outcomes, long term effects, and creativity throughout the process [3]. Wallisch and Paetzold [20] credit the creation of safer, efficient, and more enjoyable products to designers who possess a better understanding of the characteristics of end-users. Collaborating with the end-user throughout the design process provides more opportunities to develop understanding.…”

“…7 According to the user-centred design approach, new health tool innovations, including ECG SafOne, require evaluating the use of the tool in the field to see the efficiency and quality of the equipment used by health workers. 8,9 One of the studies on ECG modification by Wong et al 10 evaluated their invention by health workers to acquire feedback on the tool and found it significantly helpful. Therefore, ECG SafOne also requires to assess and evaluate its usability and functionality in practice.…”
