Conceptual metaphor constitutes both the theoretical framework and a tool for eliciting and analyzing data in this qualitative research study. The aim of this study is to analyze the role of conceptual metaphors for unpacking research participants’ conceptualizations about lesson planning in Chilean schools. An eliciting metaphor questionnaire was designed to require respondents to complete the statement “lesson planning is like…because…”. The data were analyzed through content analysis for metaphors, as follows: pre-analysis, labeling, classification, categorizing, peer judgment. The questionnaire was applied to 54 Chilean teachers from different schools. Four metaphor categories were obtained: Map, Foundations, Instructions, Burden.

En octubre del 2019 ocurrieron una serie de manifestaciones a lo largo de Chile. El objetivo de este artículo es describir las metáforas emitidas por el presidente de Chile, Sebastián Piñera, en sus discursos realizados entre el 18 y 25 de octubre, en contexto del “Estallido Social” de Chile. Las metáforas fueron identificadas y analizadas desde el enfoque de la dinámica del discurso aplicado a la metáfora. Se identificaron metáforas vinculadas a: Agenda Social, Estados de Emergencia, Manifestaciones y Necesidades de la Población. Se observa que el Presidente durante la primera semana del estallido social ve las manifestaciones como obstáculos en el “camino” del desarrollo del país; aquí, destaca la “guerra contra un enemigo poderoso” planteado como el gran obstáculo a ser derrotado y donde él debe guiar a la población hacia el desarrollo por medio de la Agenda Social, protegiendo lo “construido” a lo largo de la historia chilena.

Applying metaphor analysis to academic literacy research

The article aims to provide a critical review of 23 studies that have used metaphor analysis to provide insight into academic literacy research over the past 30 years. It begins by summarising some of the key issues and trends that have been addressed using metaphor analysis, grouping these into two broad categories: metaphor as a methodological tool, and metaphor as an intervention tool. Methods of metaphor collection and analysis are then outlined and discussed. It is noted that an increasing number of studies in this area have identified methodological issues resulting from what Armstrong et al., (2011) term ‘the subjectivity problem’, and the article thus discusses how such issues may be resolved in future research.
