Concentrically arranged multilayered fullerenes exhibiting onion-like morphology are popularly known as carbon nano-onion (CNO) and are useful in bioimaging application. On the basis of the origin of the fluorescence, the CNO-based nanoprobes are classified into type I and type II. The type I CNO-based nanoprobe needs a secondary moiety such as organic dyes or an amine functionalization at its surface to induce the fluorescence. On the other hand, the emission in type II does not originate from such an external surface passivating agent. The CNO-based system not only shows structural similarity to the well-known multiwalled carbon nanotube but is also a bit more advantageous because of its low cytotoxicity. These features enable their prolonged use in the biological system for imaging purposes. In particular, we have covered the aspects of synthesis, surface functionalization, the origin of fluorescence, and biocompatibility. In addition, recent developments directed toward in vitro and in vivo imaging studies by utilizing CNO-based nanoprobes are summarized here.

Исследованы структурные и физические свойства углерода с луковичной структурой, полученного в процессе парциального окисления природного газа при различных мольных соотношениях сырьевых газов кислород/природный газ. Установлено, что при увеличении мольного соотношения кислород/природный газ с 0,650 до 0,750 возрастает термическая стабильность углерода с луковичной структурой с 520 до 620 °C. В образце углерода с луковичной структурой, полученном при мольном соотношении кислород/природный газ -0,750 в интервале температур от 680 до 750 °C, показано наличие фазы углерода, устойчивой к окислению. Межплоскостное расстояние (d002) в полученном углероде с луковичной структурой составляло 0,341 нм. На спектрах комбинационного рассеяния света, на частоте сдвига 1164 см -1 , в образцах углерода с луковичной структурой, синтезированных при температурах ниже 1500 °С, обнаружены следы транс-полиацетилена. В результате деконволюции спектра также обнаружен парный пик на частоте сдвига 1480 см -1 . Следов транс-полиацетилена в продуктах, полученных при температуре синтеза более 1550 °С, не было зафиксировано. Термическая обработка полученного углерода с луковичной структурой, осуществлённая при 320 °С в атмосфере воздуха, приводила к почти полному удалению данных примесей. Данные спектроскопии комбинационного рассеяния света показали, что увеличение концентрации кислорода в сырьевой смеси приводит к росту соотношения интенсивностей пиков ID/IG от 0,815 до 0,849. Дифракционная картина углерода с луковичной структурой соответствовала дефектной графитированной структуре. Удельная площадь поверхности углерода с луковичной структурой варьировалась от 80 до 100 м 2 /г. Получение углерода с луковичной структурой в процессе парциального окисления природного газа в синтез-газ, необходимый для ряда «нисходящих» процессов, обеспечивает высокий выход углерода с луковичной структурой как субпродукта высокой добавленной стоимости при низких производственных затратах.

Transformation of Nanodiamonds to Onion-like Carbons by Ambient Electrospray Deposition

Onion-like carbons (OLCs) are a class of fullerene-like circular nanoallotropes of carbon, typically synthesized from nanodiamond (ND) via thermal annealing, plasma spraying, and laser ablation. These methods require high temperature, high vacuum, or inert gas. Here, we report an ambient electrospray deposition (AESD) process to transform NDs (11 ± 1 nm in size) into OLCs (50 ± 13 nm in size) in water. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for the characterization of NDs and OLCs. High-resolution TEM images showed an increased interplanar spacing from ND (0.23 nm) to OLC (0.39 nm). Raman spectra showed a shift in the ND peak from 1336 cm–1 to D-band at 1349 cm–1, and XPS quantitatively estimated an increase in the graphitization ratio (sp2/sp3) from 0.95 to 3.16 after AESD. Comparison of electrospray with sonic spray confirmed that such a transformation required an external voltage as well. AESD was also performed for NDs dispersed in ethanol and acetonitrile, which showed a solvent-dependent transformation.
