Method to determine allocation of clinical pharmacist resources

Abstract: A novel tool to guide the application of pharmacy human resources incorporates the objective criteria of patient census, patient acuity, teaching involvement, drug expenditures, and use of high-risk medications. The tool can be used to determine the appropriate allocation and placement of clinical pharmacist resources in a service-based coverage model.

“…They may also fail to capture the full scope of work performed. One promising attempt was recently made to characterize workload in order to improve the allocation of full‐time clinical pharmacist positions 79 . This tool was intended to account for patient acuity and teaching responsibilities in addition to overall patient census; however, its use of medication cost may have inflated the need in certain areas (eg, oncology), and it could not account for emotional labor, which may not correlate with patient acuity.…”

“…In 2012, Granko et al published a novel tool, pCATCH, to help guide the application of pharmacy human resources through the incorporation of patient census, patient acuity, teaching involvement, drug expenditures, and utilization of high-risk medications. 18 In 2016, Patel et al described their process of customizing an existing tool within the electronic health record to establish a comprehensive methodology to prioritize and monitor a patient's medication therapy. Overall, this tool focused on patient-specific factors, including changes in laboratory values, and assigned acuity scores to patients.…”
