Method for Supporting Platinum on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for a Selective Hydrogenation Catalyst

Abstract: We have prepared a novel material, consisting of Pt particles supported on purified singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), representing the first reported metal-loaded SWNT material. The material contains 10 wt % Pt on entangled SWNT bundles consisting of 20-100 nanotubes each. The average Pt particle size is 1-2 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) indicate chemical bonding between Pt and the SWNT surfaces. This bondin… Show more

“…These include the hydrogenation of light alkenes [23][24][25][26][27], aldehydes [21,[28][29][30][31][32][33], polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [34], nitrobenzene [35], and cyclohexene [36]. They have also been used in alkene hydroformylation [37], vacuum residue hydroprocessing [38,39], ammonia and Fisher-Tropsch synthesis [40][41][42], cyclohexanol dehydrogenation [43], NO decomposition [44] and aniline oxidation [45,46].…”

“…For conversion, Pt clearly gained high indices, confirming its pivotal role for CALD hydrogenation (Lordi et al, 2001). The SIs of Fe showed its intermediate impact on conversion, while Co's effect appeared to be negligible.…”

“…These chemicals were used as received without any further purification. Pristine CNT (>95%, Cnano) was treated with nitric acid according to the procedures described in (Lordi et al, 2001). This pretreatment removes amorphous carbonaceous and metallic impurities, and facilitates the creation of abundant surface functional groups to help uniform deposition of metal precursors.…”

“…In chemical nanotechnology, CNTs/CNFs can be used for the selective chemisorption of unwanted species from drinking water (Mn, As, Hg, Fe), as additives for the modification of the properties of polymers and as catalysts or catalyst supports [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. For instance, CNTs and CNFs exhibit excellent catalytic performance for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene to styrene [8,9].…”
