9In this study, coagulase positive staphylococci (CPS) were detected in 45% of the 69 bovine 10 milk, whey and cheese samples from five farm dairies, and all raw milk samples were 11 contaminated. Genetic diversity, staphylococcal enterotoxin genes and antimicrobial 12 susceptibility in putative Staphylococcus aureus isolates were investigated. Sixty-one percent 13 of the 72 isolates analysed belonged to the same PFGE group. The spa-typing revealed seven 14 different spa types, t2678 being the most prevalent, but t127 and t197 were also detected. 15Sixteen different toxin gene profiles were identified in 87.5% of the isolates with sec and tst 16 being the most frequent (52.5%), followed by seg and seh. All isolates were MSSA 17 (methicillin-sensitive S. aureus), and sensitive to the 12 antibiotics tested. The prevalence of 18 S. aureus, and the high diversity of isolates carrying enterotoxin genes, constitute grounds for 19 food safety concern in artisanal cheese making, whether pasteurized or not.

Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) is a relatively recent phenomenon in veterinary medicine. Although in the beginning it was restricted to a single clonal complex (CC), CC398, it has expanded into several clonal complexes, and the diversity of subtypes in the clonal complexes is increasing also. The prevalence of each type is determined somewhat geographically; for instance, the most prevalent clonal complex in Europe is CC398, whereas in Asia, it is CC9. Although few data exist regarding North America, the situation appears to be mixed there. The SCCmec cassettes detected in LA-MRSA are limited mainly to SCCmec IVa and SCCmec V, although non-typeable cassettes and SCCmec type XI, containing mecC, also have been found.The source of the SCCmec in LA-MRSA was discovered to be animals. In searching from which bacteria the SCCmec cassettes in LA-MRSA have been transferred, the most obvious species to consider are the methicillin-resistant non-S. aureus staphylococci (MRNaS). However, very few data are available from those species in animals, and the data that do exist are not detailed enough to determine the origin. Nevertheless, similar cassettes were found in MRNaS, indicating a possible origin that needs to be investigated further.

A methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) referred to as livestock-associated (LA-MRSA) has recently emerged in farm animals, particularly in pigs. Strains of this MRSA variant from Europe and North America mostly belong to clonal complex (CC) 398. Generally LA-MRSA cause asymptomatic colonization among pigs, but also in veal calves, broiler chickens, turkeys, and horses. People in contact with livestock animals are at high risk of asymptomatic colonization or infection with these bacteria. In previous years, the impact of LA-MRSA on human health was considered small. However, LA-MRSA has become more prevalent among people without direct livestock contact, especially in areas with a high density of pig production. As a result of horizontal gene transfer S. aureus CC398 strains are constantly evolving. The adaptive power of S. aureus to new hosts and acquisition of resistance to antibiotics may cause the emergence of new, more virulent clones. LA-MRSA has evolved from human-adapted methicillin-susceptible S. aureus CC398, which was proved by comparative genome analysis. The adaptation to livestock was associated with several genetic changes. The most worrying aspect of MRSA CC398 seems to be its ability to spread to humans. For this reason, continuous surveillance of further genetic changes is recommended.
