This study was performed to determine the prevalence of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in raw milk and dairy products and the presence of virulence traits in the isolates obtained and to assess their resistance to several antibiotics. MRSA was detected by CHROMagar MRSA II in 148 (22.8%) of 650 samples. Ninety‐eight isolates were confirmed as MRSA, 86 of these isolates were phenotype‐positive, 9 were phenotype/mecA‐positive, and 3 were phenotype‐negative but mecA‐positive. However, the virulence genes were not found in any MRSA strains. According to the results of antibiotic susceptibility tests, 100, 44.9, and 29.6% of strains were resistant to penicillin, tetracycline, and clindamycin, respectively. A low prevalence (1.02%) of resistance was observed against vancomycin and chloramphenicol antibiotics. Furthermore, multidrug resistance was seen among MRSA strains isolated from cheese, butter and buttercream samples. In contrast with other studies, we identified a high‐level vancomycin‐resistant MRSA strain in one buttercream sample and the intermediate‐level vancomycin resistance in six different multiple‐resistant MRSA strains from food of dairy origin. Practical applications Recently, MRSA has been isolated from foods of animal origin and become one of the rising public health concerns worldwide. This study focused on the prevalence of MRSA in raw milk and dairy products, the presence of genes encoding virulence factors that allow it to cause the disease and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. Consequently, we revealed the emergence of resistance to vancomycin and multiple antibiotics among MRSA strains. The isolation of high‐level vancomycin‐resistant MRSA strain is an important finding because vancomycin continues to be the first‐line treatment agent for MRSA infections.

Food poisoning risk related to the consumption of contaminated food with known foodborne pathogens or antibiotic‐resistant bacteria is currently a serious threat for public health. Thus, pathogenic methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus strains are considered as one of the major cause of foodborne diseases in hospitals. The present study aims to determine the prevalence and the antibiotic resistance patterns of Staphylococcus in various types of hospital food samples, work surfaces and its carriage by food handlers. A total of 608 collected samples including 300 food samples, 238 food contact surfaces and 70 nasal and hand samples were tested. The identified Staphylococcus and their antibiotic resistance patterns were analysed using the agar disk‐diffusion and PCR method was used for mecA resistance gene amplification. The prevalence of S. aureus and the coagulase‐negative staphylococci were 17·33 and 23·33%, respectively. The antibiotic resistance reached 100% towards oxacillin and Penicillin G for both S. aureus and CoNs. The mecA gene was detected in 5·71% (4/70) and 7·69% (4/52) of S. aureus and CoNs strains, respectively. The outcome of this study enlightens isolation of MRSA strains and resistant CoNs from food, food contact surfaces and food handlers. The presence of this resistant species in this critical setting, where products were intended to vulnerable and immunocompromised patients, represents a serious threat to this community. It can be a source of nosocomial infection and more precautions must be taken to prevent staphylococci food contamination mainly in hospitals. Significance and Impact of the Study This is the first study describing the antibiotic resistance patterns of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase‐negative Staphylococcus isolated from hospital food, food contact surfaces and food handlers samples in a Moroccan hospital kitchen. High levels of multi‐resistance were reported. The alarming outcome of this study emphasizes the crucial need of implementing an approach to fight multidrug‐resistant staphylococci mainly in healthcare settings, where the community have already compromised health issues.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of clinical infections in humans and its enterotoxins cause foodborne disease. In the present study, we tested a total of 51 isolates of S. aureus from small-ruminant dairy farms with artisan dairy facilities, all located in Latium, Italy. The farms have a known history of a high prevalence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Most of the MRSA isolates (27 of 51) belonged to spa-type t127 (43.1%), followed by t2678 (3.9%), t044 (2%), t1166 (2%), and t1773 (2%). PFGE performed on mecA positive strains identified one cluster (≥ 80% of similarity), comprising 22 MRSA. Nine of twenty-two MRSA isolates were assigned human host origin, and 13 isolates did not belong to a specific host. During the characterization study, one strain isolated from bulk tank milk samples harbored the pvl gene; the strain was not enterotoxigenic with a non-specific host according to the biotyping scheme, highlighting the possible emerging risk of transmission of bacterial virulence factors by foods, the environment, and foodhandlers. These findings stress the importance of hygienic measures at all processing steps of the food production chain and underline that monitoring for the presence of MRSA throughout the food chain is essential for public health.
