Methanolic extract of African mistletoe (Viscum album) improves carbohydrate metabolism and hyperlipidemia in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Abstract: Extract of African mistletoe has anti-diabetic and anti-hyperlipidemic effects in STZ-diabetic rats. AM may find clinical application in the amelioration of diabetes-induced lipid disorders.

“…After 3 weeks of treatment with methanolic extract, a significant decrease of hyperglycaemia and a twofold higher a-amylase activity than in normal rats were observed. In addition, the research demonstrated a potential protective effect against diabetesinduced renal dysfunction and normalisation of liver enzymes and lipid profile (Adaramoye et al 2012). It has been proven that some phenolic compounds inhibit the production of advanced glycation end products which are the cause of many complications of diabetes (Choudhary et al 2010).…”

“…Methanol or ethanol extracts of mistletoe were reported to decrease total plasma cholesterol levels (Avci et al 2006;Ferrero et al 2007;Bachhav et al 2012) and increase HDL-C levels (Avci et al 2006;Ben et al 2006;Adaramoye et al 2012) in mice or rats. However, the effect of an aqueous extract of Korean mistletoe on the plasma levels of cholesterol and HDL-C was controversial (Kim 2006;Kim & Kim 2009).…”

“…Viscum album is a native of Europe, western and southern Asia, is a semi-parasitic shrub growing on the stems of other trees (Adaramoye et al, 2012). Mistletoe is commonly found in the crowns of broadleaved trees, particularly apple, lime, hawthorn and poplar.…”

“…The toxic lectin, viscumin which strongly inhibits protein synthesis by inactivating the 60 S ribosomal subunit has been isolated (Olsnes et al, 1982). The antidiabetic (Adaramoye et al, 2012) and other pharmacologic activities (Gupta et al, 2012) of mistletoe have been published. Radenkovic et al (2009) reported hypotensive effect for ethanol extract of Viscum album stem at very low concentration of 3.33 Â 10 À 5 mg/kg in Wister rats which was counteracted by atropine.…”
