“…Methanosarcina have been observed in systems experiencing poor performance and may be indicative of operational instability and acetate accumulation (McMahon et al, 2004). Methanosaeta have been shown to out-compete Methanosarcina under conditions of (i) low residual acetate concentration (Griffin et al, 1998) and (ii) low temperature (Chin et al, 1999). It is likely that, under steady operational conditions, the low prevailing residual acetate concentrations (typically o30 mg l À1 ; VFA data not shown), coupled with the reduced operational temperature, contributed to the suppression of Methanosarcina by Methanosaeta groups for the majority of the trial.…”

“…Perhaps a consortium adapted to operate at 37ºC ceases to function effectively at 46ºC while a consortium adapted to operate at 55ºC ceases to operate effectively at 40ºC. Griffin et al (1998) reported that the methanogenic bacteria are the limiting microbial group during the period of adaptation to thermophilic conditions. Boušková et al (2005) also observed a strong disturbance when the reactor temperature was adjusted from 42ºC to 47ºC.…”

“…Currently, thermophilic anaerobic digestion is of wide interest as a method to treat organic wastes due to its potential to increase volumetric biogas production (Griffin et al, 1998;Ahn and Forster, 2000) and facilitate pathogen reduction (Dugba and Zhang, 1999) when compared to mesophilic anaerobic digestion. Despite these advantages, full-scale thermophilic anaerobic digestion has had limited applications, confined to only some regions such as Europe (De Baere, 2000), due to the difficulties in control and start-up processes.…”
