A emissão descontrolada dos gases produzidos em aterros sanitários é uma das maiores problemáticas de poluição local e global. Pessoas que vivem próximas às instalações dos aterros são muito afetadas, pois são continuamente expostas a maus odores e componentes tóxicos presentes no biogás, podendo até ocasionar o desenvolvimento de doenças. O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi o estudo, em laboratório, das camadas oxidativas através da metodologia das colunas de solos e da avaliação do seu comportamento quando ela for submetida à uma injeção controlada de gás. Foram utilizadas duas colunas de PVC preenchidas de solo, cada uma com cerca de 0,60 metros de comprimento. Na primeira coluna (A) foram colocados uma mistura de solo classificado como silte arenoso com composto na proporção de 1:1, já na segunda coluna (B) a mistura foi feita com um solo classificado como areia siltosa com composto nas proporções de 1:1 de solo composto. O gás utilizado para a verificação do comportamento da coluna foi metano com um fluxo ininterrupto de 3,5g CH4/m².h. Em relação a concentração dos gases, a coluna (A) apresentou maior geração de CO2, quando comparada com a coluna (B). Já em relação à capacidade de retenção de metano, ambas as colunas reduziram de forma significativa as emissões deste gás, com redução acima de 99% em para o fluxo contínuo de metano a 100%.
