During the joint Russian-Vietnamese studies in the East Vietnam Sea (known as Bien Dong or the South China Sea), manifestations of new hydrocarbon-accumulating zones were discovered; evidences of the presence of mineral indicators for solid minerals in shelf deposits were obtained; a unique zone, where accumulations of ferromanganese crusts and nodules have been formed, was revealed for the first time; evidence of unique properties of deep-water fine-dispersed carbonate sediments (which makes it possible to attribute them to an independent type of mineral resources of the East Vietnam Sea) were obtained; the ikaite mineral (that serves as an indicator of methane migration zones and cold marine paleo-conditions) was discovered in the Phu Khanh basin; heavy concentrates with indicators of rare forms of ore mineralization were collected; features of methane and mercury fluxes into the atmosphere, cultures of methane-oxidizing, oil-oxidizing and sulfate-reducing bacteria were registered for the first time within the study areas. New data on gravity and magnetic field anomalies along the shelf and slope of Vietnam have been obtained. The article presents the results of coastal geophysical and gasgeochemical research obtained in 2010–2020 within the Joint Russian-Vietnamese Laboratory for Marine Geosciences (POI FEB RAS - IMGG VAST). For the first time, anomalous methane fields (comparable to anomalies on the oil- and gas-bearing shelf and the gas hydrate-bearing slope of Sakhalin Island) were registered in the water column. The gravimagnetic survey was carried out on the central and southern shelf and the continental slope of Vietnam; the executed works supplemented the geophysical data, which had been obtained in the 80s–90s of the preceding century. The paper contributes to the Russia-Vietnamese program within the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development framework.

For the first time, this paper presents the distribution of gases (CO2, hydrocarbon C1-C4, H2, He) in 39 gas samples in bottom sediments from 19 gravity cores located in the southwestern sub-basin of the South China Sea (known as Bien Dong). The surface sediments in the studied area are mostly silty clay. In general, the concentration of methane varies in a wide range of 0.5–440 ppm. Anomalous values of methane were detected at many locations along the slope area of the southwest sub-basin of the South China Sea. The value of 2.2 ppm could be considered as a background concentration of methane in the studied region. The presence of a large-scale degassing zone of methane in the studied area was proposed. Besides, heavy hydrocarbon gases (ethylene, ethane, propane, and butane) were also determined with the highest values up to 70 ppm, 124 ppm, and 50 ppm for ethylene, ethane and propane, respectively. In addition, data of carbon dioxide, hydro and helium suggest some anomalous values of H2 up to 56.7 ppm.

We analyzed 39 gas samples, including carbon dioxide, hydrocarbon gases C1–C4, hydrogen, and helium, in surface sediment from 19 gravity cores collected from the SW sub-basin of the East Vietnam Sea (EVS) using the headspace and vacuum degassing methods. Based on the result, we discussed the distribution and origin of gases in the southwest sub-basin EVS surface sediments. The sediments are mostly clay and silty clay containing methane ranging from 0.5–440 ppm. The anomalous concentrations of methane, helium, and hydrogen occur along the continental slope in the Nam Con Son basin of Southwest EVS. Methane is the dominant gas compared to other detected hydrocarbon gases, including ethylene, propane, and butane. Based on comparative results, the background methane concentrations in surface sediments decrease from South to North, from the southwestern sub-basin of the East Vietnam Sea to the Phu Khanh and the Red river basins. We propose the presence of a large-scale degassing zone of hydrocarbon gases and discuss the gases’ origin in surface sediments based on hydrocarbon gas ratios, carbon isotope compositions of carbon dioxide and methane, and the relationship between geochemical characteristics of surface sediments and fault system, and surface sediment gases.
