Methacrylate monomer as an alternative to styrene in typical polyester–styrene copolymers

Abstract: This study presents the research on the influence of crosslinking monomers [styrene and diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA)] on the properties of unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs). Syntheses of the unsaturated polyesters (UPs) modified with benzyl alcohol were carried out. Then, each polyester was used in preparation of five resin solutions with different amounts of crosslinking monomers acting as reactive diluents. These diluents improve the processability of UPs reducing their viscosities. They also … Show more

“…Comparing the shape of the tan delta curves of the tested blends, it can be seen that the obtained materials were not homogeneous. The FWHM value of the tan delta peak is the parameter which allows to determine the homogeneity of the tested sample [45][46][47][48][49]. The FWHM values were much higher compared to the starting material.…”

“…The unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) used for the study consisted of 70% of unsaturated polyester and 30% of styrene as a crosslinking monomer. The detailed description of this synthesis and curing procedure was presented in the work of [25].…”

“…This plateau and elimination of a molten region indicated the formation of cross-linked networks. 49 , 50 The cross-link densities, ν e , of cured resins with 25 wt % loading of IA thermoplastic polyester precursor were higher than those with 10 wt % loading, which may be due to increased IA content, although the averages for the C12/IA-meth cured resins fall within experimental error. The ν e did not vary between C12/IA-meth and C18/IA-meth resins at all thermoplastic polyester precursor loadings, suggesting that the difference in the chain length of the diacids did not have an appreciable effect on ν e .…”
