“…Caves have relatively stable internal atmospheres that have been studied for the purpose of understanding speleothem paleoclimatology ( Spötl, Fairchild & Tooth, 2005 ; Banner et al, 2007 ; Baldini et al, 2008 ; Fairchild & Treble, 2009 ; Ridley et al, 2015 ; Hasegawa et al, 2018 ; Kelley et al, 2019 ), habitat and natural resource conservation ( Martin et al, 2010 ; Jernigan & Carson, 2011 ; Šebela & Turk, 2011 ), and speleogenesis and exploration ( Dublyanski & Dublyanski, 2000 ; Wefer & Lucas, 2015 ). Very high-resolution measurements of meteorological parameters such as temperature, humidity, pressure, and airflow, however, indicate that caves contain distinct microclimates that are temporally and spatially influenced by water and air flux from the surface ( Badino, 2010 ), potentially contributing to the creation of niche habitats.…”
