Metatranscriptomic Analysis of Plant Viruses in Imported Pear and Kiwifruit Pollen

Abstract: Pollen is a vector for viral transmission. Pollen-mediated viruses cause serious economic losses in the fruit industry. Despite the commercial importance of pollen-associated viruses, the diversity of such viruses is yet to be fully explored. In this study, we performed metatranscriptomic analyses using RNA sequencing to investigate the viral diversity in imported apple and kiwifruit pollen. We identified 665 virus-associated contigs, which corresponded to four different virus species. We identified one virus,… Show more

“…However, limited research has been conducted on the diversity and abundance of phyllosphere viral communities and their interactions with other microorganisms ( Morella et al., 2018 ). Recently, there has been a growing focus on mining virome information using culture-independent metagenome or metatranscriptome technologies ( Forero-Junco et al., 2022 ; Lauber and Seitz, 2022 ; Lee and Jeong, 2022 ). Understanding the virome in plant-associated environments can provide valuable insights into their potential influence on microbial adaptation to various stresses ( Xu P. et al, 2008 ).…”

“…The expected transfer is not observed for viral exchange between crops and weed plants, likely as a consequence of unforeseen biological or ecological barriers. Metatranscriptomics approaches have been successfully implemented to discover highly diverse and novel viruses from rice, citrus, sunflower and pear samples [14,[58][59][60][61]. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive high-throughput survey of viral sequences associated with weeds.…”
