Metatranscriptome-based strategy reveals the existence of novel mycoviruses in the plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense

Abstract: Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) is a devastating plant pathogen that caused a great financial loss in the banana’s source area. Metatranscriptomic analysis was used to determine the diversity of mycoviruses in 246 isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense. Partial or nearly complete genomes of 20 mycoviruses were obtained by BLASTp analysis of RNA sequences using the NCBI database. These 20 viruses were grouped into five distinct lineages, namely Botourmiaviridae, Endornaviridae, Mitoviridae, Mymonavirid… Show more

“…cubense mymonavirus 1 (FocMyV1), and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense negative-stranded RNA virus (FocNSRV1) [27]. Among these mycoviruses, FodV1, FoOuLV1, FoAV1, and FoMyV1 are capable of causing hypovirulence on their host fungi [18,22,25,26].…”

“…Mycoviruses are viruses that replicate in fungi or oomycetes and have been discovered across all major fungal groups ( Xie and Jiang, 2014 ; Ghabrial et al, 2015 ; Sato and Suzuki, 2023 ). Recent metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses have significantly expanded the repertoire of mycoviruses, resulting in the identification of numerous novel taxa such as Fusaviridae , Alternaviridae, and proposed Splipalmiviridae ( Sutela et al, 2020 ; He et al, 2022 ; Kondo et al, 2022 ; Ye et al, 2023 ; Zhang et al, 2023 ; Li et al, 2024 ). Most mycoviruses establish latent infections with no discernible impact on their fungal host.…”

“…cubense negative-stranded RNA virus 1 (FocNSRV1), were documented with the ability to infect F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense [ 9 ]. Fusarium oxysporum ourmia-like virus 1 (FoOuLV1) [ 10 ] and Fusarium oxysporum alternavirus 1 (FoAV1) [ 11 ] were isolated from F. oxysporum , causing Fusarium wilt of bitter gourd and Fusarium wilt of Lilium brownii , respectively.…”
