Metastatic thymoma in the liver of a dog

Abstract: A 12-y-old neutered male Portuguese Water dog was presented because of a 1-y history of persistent hyporexia, diarrhea, and recurrent pyelonephritis. Abdominal ultrasound revealed hepatic nodules and diffuse splenomegaly, and radiographs revealed a mediastinal mass. Fine-needle aspirates of the liver, spleen, and mediastinal mass were suspicious for lymphoma. Flow cytometry identified small T cells that co-expressed CD4 and CD8 at all sites, most suspicious for thymoma, but lymphoma could not be ruled out. PCR… Show more

“…Hughes and Borman reported adiaspiromycosis in a wild European rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ), which showed a bleb-like structure of the outermost layer on the surface. Bleb-like structures similar to those were found during our observations [ 22 ]. Multinucleate giant cells surrounded adiaspores shown in Additional file 2 resemble those of an earlier report of a study conducted by Hughes and Borman [ 22 ].…”

“…Metastases may occur in regional intrathoracic lymph nodes and the lungs in up to 20% of cases [ 1 ] but are rarely diagnosed at presentation. Rare reports of metastasis to other organs, such as the liver, have been reported [ 36 ]. One dog in this study developed liver metastasis, which was diagnosed at necropsy; this dog had a diagnosis of thymoma, but this finding may raise the suspicion of a diagnostic error.…”
