Metastatic sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma and tumour‐related sarcoid reaction

Abstract: The association between malignancy and tumour-related sarcoid reaction is well documented, characterised by non-caseating granulomatous disease in haematological and solid malignancies. Its occurrence in colon cancer is rare and of unclear clinical significance. Herein, we present a case report of a 32-year-old woman diagnosed with concurrent metastatic sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma and pulmonary granulomatous disease suggestive of a tumour-related sarcoid reaction.

“…Only one case of drug-induced sarcoid reaction could be diagnosed as sarcoid reaction by radiological findings after the drug was withheld [ 24 ]. Most sarcoid reactions are discovered at the time of primary tumor resection [ 5 , 6 , 8 , 9 , 13 , 16 , 18 , 20 22 , 26 , 27 , 29 , 30 ]; however, some (both drug-induced and non-drug-induced sarcoid reactions) are discovered 1 month to 5 years after surgery [ 10 , 14 , 15 , 17 , 19 , 23 , 25 , 28 , 31 ]. Granuloma formation is often found in lymph nodes, whereas spleen sarcoid reactions are more frequently found with non-drug-induced sarcoidosis.…”

“…Although various types of malignancies, including lymphoma ( 11 , 12 ), breast cancer ( 13 , 14 ), stomach cancer ( 15 , 16 ), colon cancer ( 17 , 18 ), and lung cancer ( 19 , 20 ), have been reported to be associated with SLR development, its clinical significance in cancer patients remains unclear. In previous studies ( 14 , 21 ), SLR has been associated with better cancer outcomes.…”
