Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma to the vocal cord ten years after radical nephrectomy: A case report

Abstract: Renal cancer is a common neoplasm in the genitourinary tract. It characterized by unpredictable site and duration of metastasis. Distant metastases are common and may involve any region of the body. It spread in a way that is not clear. Late metastasis could occur even after complete resection of the tumor. An extended follow-up is advised to deal with the risk of delayed metastases.

“…This could be explained because most metastases to the larynx are through the systemic circulation, following the route of the inferior vena cava to the laryngeal artery, and through retrograde circulation of the paravertebral venous plexus or thoracic lymphatic duct10 and because the glottis and subglottis have fewer blood and lymphatic supply 11. In our case, the tumour was located to the glottis, and this has been described before only by a few articles 12–16…”

“…Consequently, the lesion was surgically excised through total laryngectomy, both in order to clarify its aetiology and to ease the patient’s symptoms. As metastasis to the larynx may affect respiratory function, it seems reasonable to address lesions in this region aggressively 13. In most cases reported so far, the recommended treatment approach for laryngeal metastasis of RCC is total laryngectomy with bilateral radical neck dissection (and total thyroidectomy if needed), followed by adjuvant treatment 15.…”

“…La enfermedad metastásica de CCR se puede presentar varios años, tras el tratamiento del tumor primario, inclusive hasta 10 años post nefrectomía 2,6 , por ende, se debe tener siempre en consideración tras aparición de síntomas en región de cabeza y cuello.…”
