Metapocyrtus kitangladensis sp. n., a new Pachyrhynchus cumingii GR Waterhouse, 1841 mimic from Mindanao Island, Philippines

Abstract: A description of a new species from the genus Metapocyrtus Heller, 1912 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Pachyrhynchini) from Mt Kitanglad Range Natural Park, an ASEAN Heritage Site in northern Mindanao is presented and illustrated. The recent discovery is also the first mimic record of Pachyrhynchuscumingii GR Waterhouse, 1841 which are both found in the same locality. A Coptorhynchus sp. showing similar elytral patterns was also documented to be part of the mimicry complex. The new species differs from the other … Show more

“…However, they were more abundant along trails and open areas. As documented previously, the majority of the Pachyrhynchini including Metapocyrtus are often collected along trails and ridges which are either fully or partially exposed to the sun ( Cabras et al 2019 ). The interior of the forest does not usually give an outstanding result in terms of collecting Pachyrhynchini .…”

“…Metapocyrtus (Orthocyrtus) davaoensis sp. nov. was collected at nearly the same locality as M. kitangladensis Cabras, Medina & Zhang, 2019. This suggests a possible mimicry between these two species, for they have similar elytral markings.…”

“…One of its known genera is the Metapocyrtus . Recent discoveries on new species of Philippine weevils from the genera Metapocyrtus and Pachyrhynchus were conducted by Filipino taxonomists and systematists collaborated with taxonomists and entomologists from other countries ( Yoshitake 2012a ; 2012b ; Bollino & Sandel 2015 ; Rukmane & Barsevskis 2016 ; Rukmane 2016 ; Cabras & Rukmane 2016 , Cabras et al . 2019 ; Cabras & Medina 2018 ).…”

“…Currently, there are more than 51,000 species of weevils in 4,600 genera in which Philippines contributes more than 400 species [4]. Discoveries on new species of Philippine weevils was prominently conducted by taxonomists from other countries [5,6,7,8,9] but recently more dis-coveries were published by Filipino taxonomists and systematists specifically from the genera Pachyrhynchus and Metapocyrtus [9,10,11].…”
