Metaplastic carcinoma of the breast with squamous differentiation: prognostic factors and multidisciplinary treatment

Abstract: Background The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics of patients diagnosed with metaplastic carcinoma of the breast with squamous differentiation and to identify the particular clinical and histological characteristics that need to be taken into account in this type of tumors. Case presentation Retrospective observational study of two patients managed at our hospital between 2014 and 2020 (15 months mean follow-up), plus all ca… Show more

“…In a case report, a patient who received radiation therapy and adjuvant chemotherapy developed recurrent disease and eventually died [ 15 ] . Therefore, multidisciplinary treatment is beneficial for patients in complex individual situations [ 16 ]. One-year and five-year etiology-specific survival rates for breast SCC are 81.6% and 63.5%, respectively [ 17 ].…”

“…Being rare tumors, there is little data on the optimal treatment regimen for metaplastic squamous breast cancer and its management remains similar to other invasive breast carcinomas ( 6 ). As it was proven that MBC responds poorly to hormonal and chemotherapy regimens in comparison to other triple negative breast invasive breast carcinomas, neoadjuvant radiation therapy in combination with surgical management can improve the clinical outcomes ( 6 , 7 ). Due to the large tumor size and the high rate of local recurrence, modified radical mastectomy is considered as the surgery of choice for MBC ( 6 , 7 ).…”

“…Of note, mesenchymal metaplastic phenomena may originate from foci of typical ductal hyperplasia, suggesting the possible existence of nonobligate benign precursors of MpBC (Sabella et al ., 2019). A proportion of MpBCs are exclusively characterized by carcinomatous elements, usually displaying a pure squamous cell carcinoma differentiation (Graziano et al ., 2016; Tejera Hernández et al ., 2022). The more frequent biphasic pattern is that of adenosquamous carcinoma, with solid squamous cell nests admixed with a glandular component, mostly of high grade (Romanucci et al ., 2021).…”
