Metaplastic breast cancer with chondroid differentiation—case report and literature review

Abstract: Metaplastic breast cancer (MBC) comprises less than 1% of all breast cancers, and it is defined by a mixture of adenocarcinoma plus mesenchymal and epithelial components. It is more common in older and black female patients. It has a larger size and faster growth, and it is frequently node-negative and triple-negative when compared with invasive ductal carcinoma. The authors report the case of a 72-year-old female patient, presenting with a breast lump, whose biopsy revealed a probable MBC with chondroid diffe… Show more

“…2 In our case, the primary tumor was a rare MpBC with chondroid differentiation. This particular histological subtype of breast carcinoma is rare, 28 and, as far as we know, has never been reported to spread to any salivary gland. The high incidence of distant metastases and low nodal involvement rates suggests that the hematogenous route plays an essential role in its dissemination.…”

“…It is of interest that several genetic factors and pathways have been recently related to MpBC development. Molecular pathways including overexpression of CD44 (+) and yes-associated protein, which is associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, seem to play an important part in metaplastic breast carcinogenesis [ 15 , 23 , 41 ]. However, the expression of molecular markers related to carcinogenesis seems to depend on the histological subtype.…”

“…Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MBC) is a rare type of breast cancer with a highly aggressive nature and is associated with high mortality and morbidity [ 1 ]. It constitutes 1% of all invasive breast cancers [ 2 ]. MBCs are heterogeneous neoplasms that display a unique morphological presentation with epithelial and mesenchymal components.…”
