Abstract: The Free Aceh Movement, locally called Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM), developed several unique political discourses after having signed a peace accord with the Government of Indonesia (GoI) in Helsinki in 2005. The discourses created are metaphorical in Acehnese language, aimed to structure people's mind and to be accepted and transformed into their actions that supported GAM during pre-public election post conflicts. However, research on analyzing the metaphors is scant. This research used Johnson's (1980a, 198… Show more

“…O'Brien (2009) also found the use of dehumanizing metaphors in denigrating a marginalized group of people. In a nearly similar vein, in Usman's (2017) research findings, the local politicians used the terms "traitor(s)" and "others" to describe those who were politically not on their sides. All these findings suggest that many dehumanizing concepts are used to describe people negatively through metaphors, depending on how they believe that they understand the concepts' meaning.…”

“…Meanwhile, a French social theorist, Foucault developed the idea of discourse by looking at the characteristics of an approach which emphasises the 'power of the relationship that is expressed through language and behaviour, and the relationship between language and power'. This definition seems to be more, interdisciplinary, comprehensive and closely interrelated in a way that language and power has a significant role in wider social practices and interactions (Usman, 2017).…”

“…Humorous interactions commonly happened spontaneously as a result of linguistic problems during the vertical armed conflicts, which were then settled in Helsinki, Finland, in 2005, mediated by the former President, Marty Ahtisaari, who led the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) (Aspinall, 2005;Usman, 2017). For instance, on one side, many villagers especially in the countryside where the wars, ambushes, or fire exchanges frequently occurred mostly spoke and understood the Acehnese language but had little command of Indonesian language.…”
