Implicit meaning is one of the language phenomena which need overcoming in translation. This present study aims to investigate in what construction the implicit meaning is realized in Indonesian and how implicit meaning is handled when it is rendered into English. This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were taken from a book of Indonesian short stories entitled Mandi Api (Soethama, 2006) and its translation in English entitled Ordeal by Fire (Cork, 2008). The results of the research showed that implicit meaning in Indonesian texts is conveyed into English in two ways. Firstly, the implicit meaning is kept implicit. Secondly, it is realized in explicit construction. The implicit information of the source texts is made explicit in target texts for some reasons which include grammatical reason, semantic reason, and stylistic reason. In conclusion, although the source and the target texts have different constructions in the translation under study, the source meanings are successfully conveyed into English.

Restaurant Reviews in Brazil and the USA: A Feast of Cultural Differences and Their Impact on Translation

This article shares the findings from a study aimed to create a bilingual English-Portuguese glossary of terms and collocations characteristic of restaurant reviews, especially concerning the search for translation equivalents. Relying on the assumptions of corpus linguistics, we conducted both quantitative and qualitative analyses to investigate a comparable corpus of texts published in the United States and Brazil. The manual investigation of simple and compound keywords retrieved with Sketch Engine showed that the functional translation of texts pertaining to the genre restaurant review in that pair of languages goes far beyond terminological equivalence, since it should also consider the specificities of the genre in both languages and cultures. We observed that not only are American texts much longer than their Brazilian Portuguese counterparts, but the former are also significantly more technical than the latter. Moreover, restaurant reviews unveil a number of cultural differences when written in different languages for a distinct target audience. To produce texts that work properly for the target reader, the translator should be aware of the conventions of this domain in both languages and cultures before deciding what aspects should be maintained, adapted, or omitted. In addition, elements that do not recur in both lists also reveal cultural differences between texts of a similar genre. We concluded that corpora may not only help translators to interpret source language texts, but also assist them in finding solutions for the translation process.

This study deals with demetaphorization in the translation of meditation text from Indonesian into English. Meditation text whose goal is to persuade other people to some extent conveys its persuasive meaning in metaphorical grammatical constructions. Drawing Halliday and Matthiessen's (2014) transitivity structure, Halliday's (2009) grammatical metaphor and House's (2015) translation as re-contextualization, this study focuses on the types of ideational grammatical metaphor as non-congruent ways of representing experience of the world found in Indonesian text of meditation and how they are manipulated in English to create a specific effect on the speakers of English. The result shows that metaphorical constructions found in Indonesian text of meditation include deverbalization in the form of nominalization and verbalization. Based on the underlying process, the types of nominalization found include: 1) nominalization of implied material/action process; 2) nominalization of implied relational process; 3) nominalization of implied mental process and 4) nominalization of implied behavioral process. In its translation, these types of nominalization are demetaphorized and rendered by a more expansively English construction. The implied process which is implicit in Indonesian is made explicit in English. Metaphorical constructions of verbalization found show that adjectives and noun are reworded as process. When they are translated into English, they are demetaphorized that adjectives are used to construe quality and noun to construe entity. By this nonmetaphorical construction, the English texts become more explicit and more direct.
