This paper develops the notion of metonymy scenarios by exploring the social and cognitive dimensions of various creative uses of metonymy in a collection of digital banners created for the Global Climate Strike movement. The paper argues that the banners exploit existing metonymic relationships to activate dominant anthropocentric discourses in society, and to subvert them via processes of recontextualisation and reappropriation, in order to challenge system conventions and normative attitudes regarding climate change. The literature to date has not adequately considered metonymy as a dynamic and scenario-activating cognitive operation, nor has it thoroughly investigated the relationship between metonymy and irony. However, the data analysed here show that several creative uses of metonymy, including twice-true metonymy, metonymy in combination with metaphor, and the juxtaposition of different metonymies are markers of what this paper posits as metonymic mininarratives or scenarios.

Some theorists argue that Grice's account of metaphor is intended as a rational reconstruction of a more general inferential process of linguistic communication (i.e., conversational implicature). However, there is a multi-source trend which treats Grice's remarks on metaphor as unabashedly psychological. The psychologized version of Grice's view runs in serial: compute what is said; reject what is said as contextually inappropriate; run pragmatic processing to recover contextually appropriate meaning. Citing data from reaction time studies, critics reject Grice's project as psychologically implausible. The alternative model does not rely on serial processing or input from what is said (i.e., literal meaning). I argue the serial processing model and its criticisms turn on a misunderstanding of Grice's account. My aim is not to defend Grice's account of metaphor per se, but to reinterpret auxiliary hypotheses attributed to him. I motivate two points in relation to my reinterpretation. The first point concerns the relationship between competence and performance-based models. To the second point: Several of the revised hypotheses make predictions that are largely consistent with psycho and neurolinguistic data.

Artikel ini membahas metafora bahasa Aceh yang terdapat pada komentar akun Instagram @tercyduk.aceh. Penelitian ini bertujuan menemukan jenis metafora yang dipakai oleh pengguna Instagram saat memberikan komentar. Sumber data penelitian ini diperoleh pada kolom komentar akun Instagram @tercyduk.aceh sementara yang dijadikan data penelitian ini adalah komentar yang mengandung metafora. Penelitian ini berjenis kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik baca dan catat. Pengolah data dilakukan dengan tahapan seleksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan simpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa metafora struktural dipakai untuk mengatakan suatu konsep ditransfer dengan menggunakan konsep yang lain, sementara metafora orientasional dipakai untuk mengatakan hal-hal yang berhubungan dengan orientasi pengalaman manusia. Selanjutnya, metafora ontologis didasarkan atas kejadian. Jumlah metafora yang ditemukan dalam penelitian ini yakni, metafora ontologis sebanyak 10, metafora struktural 8, dan metafora orientasional 6. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa untuk mendukung ataupun memperkuat gagasan metafora dipakai emotikon pada bagian akhir komentar. Selain itu, metafora yang digunakan oleh pengguna Instagram juga mengarah pada kata makian. Hal itu disebabkan metafora merupakan salah satu gaya bahasa untuk mengatakan kata atau kelompok kata bukan dengan arti yang sebenarnya, melainkan sebagai lukisan yang berdasarkan persamaan atau perbandingan.
