Metamodel-assisted analysis of an integrated model composition: An example using linked surface water – groundwater models

Abstract: Highlights 1) Distributed groundwater models were linked together with a river model via the OpenMI software platform. 2) Kriging metamodels were applied to facilitate analysis with the integrated models. 3) The overall computational savings were in the range of 70-90%. 4) Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that metamodels were in good agreement with the responses of the integrated models. 5) Sensitivity Analysis using the metamodels accurately identified the important parameters.

“…In cases of high runtime, replacing the most computationally expensive constituent models with metamodels may be a viable option. Metamodels approximate the input-output behavior of the original model ( Castelletti et al, 2012 ; Christelis and Hughes, 2018 ; Pietzsch et al, 2020 ) and therefore provide simplified representation(s) of more complex models ( Asher et al, 2015 ; Razavi et al, 2012 ). Metamodels leverage the emergent simplicity of complex systems and although there are a variety of methods available to accomplish this, generally metamodels require the complex models (i.e.…”

“…Approximation models have been widely used during the last decade in water resources (e.g., [13, 14]) and especially in groundwater modelling. Razavi et al [5] and Asher et al [2] performed an extended review of surrogate model applications in water resources field.…”
