Metamagnetic behaviour and effect of field cooling on sharp magnetization jumps in multiferroic Y 2 CoMnO 6

Abstract: -We present sharp magnetization jumps and field induced irreversibility in magnetization in multiferroic Y 2 CoMnO 6 . Appearance of magnetic relaxation and field sweep rate dependence of magnetization jumps resemble the martensite like scenario and suggests the coexistence of E*-type antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases at low temperatures. In Y 2 CoMnO 6 , the critical field required for the sharp jump can be increased or decreased depending on the magnitude and direction of the cooling field; this is … Show more

“…However, the T C 's of all the YNMO samples are similar (88.5 K) irrespective of the preparation conditions. Both YCMO and YNMO samples show single magnetization transition in FC conditions, which are consistent with earlier reports . Multiple magnetic transitions has been observed in La 2 NiMnO 6 , La 2 CoMnO 6 , and Eu 2 CoMnO 6 .…”

“…Compared to YNMO, the magnetic properties of YCMO indicated diversified behaviors, like ferromagnetic, spin glass and metamagnetic etc . Nayar et al reported that the magnetic properties of Y 2 CoMnO 6 strongly depend on the applied field .…”

“…The striking point is the occurrence of strong jumps in the loops. These jumps or steps were reported to depend on the field sweep rate and field-cooling conditions [14,32]. Specifically, the steps in a nominal Y 2 CoMnO 6 sample (with unknown ASD) studied in [Ref.…”

“…Specifically, the steps in a nominal Y 2 CoMnO 6 sample (with unknown ASD) studied in [Ref. [32]] were attributed to the sharp transformation of E-type regions into FM ones (martensiticlike transformation). However, our neutron diffraction study precludes this scenario.…”

“…A linear variation of the virgin curve magnetization with a stair-like change at 2.4 T and a no- saturation trend even up to 90 kOe are observed in the bulk ESMO polycrystalline sample; this indicates its strong AF behaviour (see SI, Figure S(3)). Further features such as irreversibility, the absence of metamagnetic beahviour for the consequent field sweeps and the virgin curve falling outside the M(H) hysteresis envelope indicate that such an isothermally field-induced magnetic phase transition is of the first-order kind 31, 35, 36 . For low doping of Sr ≤ 0.5; there are clear field induced sharp magnetization jumps for fields ≤ 50 kOe (not shown).…”
