“…MT induction is known to be modulated by both metals and organic contaminants but previous findings are sometimes contradictory. Simultaneous exposure to Cu and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), was found to greatly increase MT induction in fish liver even when exposure to the individual contaminants reduced MT expression (Roméo et al 1997). On the other hand, MT induction caused by a mixture of metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) has been found to be suppressed by PAHs (Risso-de Faverney et al 2000).…”

“…The concentrations used for cadmium and copper were chosen as suggested in some published works and were very much lower than DL50 (Castano et al 1996;Roméo et al 1997). A dose of 500 lg/kg cadmium or copper was sublethal (DL 50 of Cd = 3 mg/kg and DL 50 of Cu = 2.5 mg/kg for Dicentrarchus labrax and Sparus aurata) and usually used in studies of acute toxicity in different fish species in our laboratory (D. labrax and S. aurata).…”

“…MTs act as free radical scavengers and particularly the MT20 isoform (Dondero et al 2005). Benzo-(a)-pyrene at sublethal doses (20 and 18 mg/kg) provokes a repression of MT level by disturbing the structure of hepatocytes of fish (Roméo et al 1997; Van den Hurk et al 2000).…”

“…On the other hand, the decreased MT level in fish from Sidi Saâd site can be caused by the degeneration of tissue under high pollutant levels (Paris-Palacios et al 2003). Heavy metals such as Cu may provoke a toxic effect on hepatic MT synthesis via oxidative stress generation (Roméo et al 1997). It is not excluded that the exposure to various contaminants determines a decrease of reduced GSH concentration affecting the biosynthesis of hepatic MTs.…”
