Show more

“…Long after the discovery of the "nickel effect" by Wilke et al [1], renewed interest was generated by the work of Brookhart and co-workers on the development of nickel-based complexes chelated by a-diimine ligands [2,3]. This resulted in the development of a wide range of nickel precatalysts bearing P,P-[4e6], P,N-[7e12], P,O-[13e19], N,N- [20e25] or N,O-[26e31] type bidentate ligands.…”

“…[7] More than 50 years ago, Karl Ziegler and co-workers discovered the Aufbaureaktion [8] -the insertion of ethylene into an aluminumalkyl bond at very high ethylene pressures. The "Nickeleffekt" [9] and subsequent explorations of the influence of other metals with regard to ethylene insertion led to transition-metal-catalyzed ethylene polymerization. [10] We report here on a lanthanide-catalyzed version of the Aufbaureaktion.…”

“…Initially, the catalytic activity of Ni -containing catalysts was attributed to colloidal dispersed elemental nickel [129] . Subsequently, hydride Ni complexes such as R -Ni -H or R 2 Al -Ni -H have been suggested to play a key role in hydrometallation of alkenes [130] .…”
