Metalloproteins and metal sensing

Abstract: Almost half of all enzymes must associate with a particular metal to function. An ambition is to understand why each metal-protein partnership arose and how it is maintained. Metal availability provides part of the explanation, and has changed over geological time and varies between habitats but is held within vital limits in cells. Such homeostasis needs metal sensors, and there is an ongoing search to discover the metal-sensing mechanisms. For metalloproteins to acquire the right metals, metal sensors must c… Show more

“…The current model of metal-induced transcriptional regulation by MTF-1 suggests that excess metals displace Zn from MT (23). This free Zn fills zinc finger(s) within the DNA binding domain of cytosolic MTF-1 (24,25).…”

“…Even the essential metals, for example iron and copper, can become detrimental above a certain concentration inside cells. Many biological processes are thus present to regulate and maintain intracellular metal homeostasis (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). One of them is through metalloregulators, which respond to metal ions and regulate the transcription of genes that protect the bacteria from metal-induced stress (5)(6)(7)10).…”
