Metallocene-Catalyzed Copolymerization of MMA with Anionically Synthesized Methacryloyl Macromonomers

Abstract: Well-defined graft copolymers with poly(methyl methacrylate) backbone and poly(styrene) (PS), poly(isoprene) (PI), or poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) branches were synthesized by combining anionic and metallocene catalyzed polymerization. The synthetic strategy involves the preparation of methacryloyl macromonomers of PS, PI, and PDMS by anionic polymerization, followed by copolymerization with methyl methacrylate using the highly reactive catalytic system Cp 2ZrMe2/B(C6F5)3/ZnEt2. The macromonomers and the frac… Show more

“…On the copolymerization of macromonomers with vinylic or (meth)acrylic monomers, the macromonomer technique is one of the most useful ways to prepare graft copolymers with the same length of side‐chains 21, 22. The syntheses of PDMS‐containing graft copolymers by using the macromonomer technique have been reported in a lot of literature, but the copolymerization was always poorly controlled and the graft copolymers prepared were ill‐defined by using conventional radical copolymerization 23–26. However, well‐defined PDMS‐containing graft copolymers could be obtained via the controlled/“living” polymerization method 24–27.…”

“…Isoprene polymers were first used for synthetic rubber production in 1917,1 and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is among the most important commercial polymers. The blending of these polymers or the preparation of their copolymers is convenient for changing their mechanical, thermal, or chemical properties and thus broadening their application spectrum 2, 3…”

“…Isoprene copolymers were previously obtained with anionic,4–13 cationic,14, 15 coordination,16, 17 and radical polymerization3, 4, 18, 19 techniques. Such copolymers are interesting because they can be used for rubber production, as effective compatibilizers for natural rubber/acrylic polymer blends,3, 19 and as potential materials for medical applications 20, 21…”
