Metallo‐Supramolecular Materials Based on Amine‐Grafting Onto Polypentafluorostyrene

Abstract: The post-modification of polypentafluorostyrene via the selective substitution of the para- fluorine by amine-functionalized molecules represents a versatile method for the preparation of functional materials. This communication presents the extension of this synthetic approach towards metallosupramolecular materials. First, the incorporation of terpyridines as metallo-supramolecular binding motifs is demonstrated, which enables the formation of a supramolecular crosslinked gel upon the addition of Fe(II) ions… Show more

“…In a recent approach, Schubert and colleagues employed this method to prepare poly(pentafluorostyrene) with terpyridines in the side chains [127]. First, poly(pentafluorostyrene) with a narrow polydispersity index of just 1.08 was synthesized by nitroxide-mediated polymerization.…”

“…In addition, the corresponding binding constants of log K 1 and log K 2 were determined as high as 5 and 7, respectively, which was similar to those from terpyridine ligand and transition–metal cation interactions . The metallosupramolecular interactions between terpyridine and transition–metal cations have demonstrated their magic to construct varied supramolecular polymer materials, such as block copolymer, dendrimer, polymer brush, and polymer gels . Therefore, we expected that the coordination of triurea receptor with phosphate ion could also be employed to build varied supramolecular polymer materials.…”

“…In our previous work, triurea group has been demonstrated as efficient receptor to bind the phosphate anion with a 2:1 binding mode, in which the logarithmic association constants log K 1 and log K 2 were calculated as high as 5 and 7, respectively. The binding mode and the association constant were similar to the well‐known terpyridine scaffold and Fe 2+ metal ions, which has been used to prepare the metal containing supramolecular gels …”

“…13 The reversible and/or flexible coordination of the metal atom offers diverse possibilities in exploring self-healing materials or sensors, for instance. For the latter approach, polymers can be synthesized by free radical polymerization (FRP), 16 atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 17 nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP), 18 reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), 19 or ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) 20 to list just a few examples. by polyaddition or polycondensation reactions, 15 or attached to the side chains of a polymer.…”
